Science Station: Feasibility Study
CEDAR RAPIDS, IA
In June, 2008, the Cedar River crested at 31 feet, seven feet higher than the floodwall behind the Science Station building and 11 feet above the previous record set in 1929. The museum’s basement and first floor were completely flooded, and most of its contents were destroyed. The Science Station hired West Office to evaluate the feasibility of creating and sustaining a new Science Center in Cedar Rapids and addressing optimal museum programmatic areas. The result was a Master Plan which included benchmarks against other similar museums, recommendations for a “right-sized” facility for Cedar Rapids, and an exhibit approach that supports formal education while partnering with local industries and community stakeholders.
